AC charging comprises of either Mode 2 or Mode 3 charging:
Charging speeds and times are defined by the output power/rate in kW in relation to the EVs battery size in kWh. Each vehicle’s rate is limited by its on-board charger (OBC) which controls the power into the battery.
Direct Current (DC) Charging
Faster EVSE charging speeds is delivered by Mode 4, DC charging hardware, capable of power output exceeding 22 kW by directly connecting to an EV’s battery instead of via the OBC, for charging times below 50, 30 and even 10 minutes.
