Malaysia adopts the standards set by the IEC for AC and DC charging stations. Generally, Type 1 is known as the Japanese or J-plug and Type 2 is common for Continental cars and all newer EVs. ChargEV does not have Type 1 connectors on its network and cars using this outlet will require an adaptor.
Type 1 and Type 2 connectors are the two most common EV charging plug types. Here’s the difference:
🔌 Type 1 Connector (J1772)
- Single-phase charging
- Slower charging speed (AC charging up to 7.4 kW)
- Mainly used in older EV models and North America, Japan
- Has 5 pins
🔌 Type 2 Connector (Mennekes)
- Three-phase charging
- Faster charging speed (AC charging up to 22 kW, DC charging much higher)
- Standard in Europe, Malaysia, and many modern EVs
- Has 7 pins
Most public chargers in Malaysia and Europe use Type 2, while some older EVs may still use Type 1. Always check your EV’s connector type before charging!
